Innovation

Hello! I hope this newsletter finds you well and achieving your personal and professional goals. I’d like to discuss the topic of ‘innovation’ with you. A software and services company must have high expertise in the act of innovating, if they are to become and remain a trusted partner.

The simple definition of ‘innovation’ is to produce a new method, idea or product (Google search). However, while all definitions are valid, not all definitions are equally powerful or purposeful. So InReach has a different take on innovation. We believe that innovation is the result of possessing the knowledge to produce offers and practices that enhance people’s capacity to take care of their business concerns.

With that, we’ve included articles in this newsletter with content driven by InReach innovation. You’ll find an article on the launch of our new HTML5 Customer Module and an article on an effective marketing technique called, Referral Marketing. Innovation can cross multiple domains of action, whether it’s new software development, or enhanced marketing practices. I hope you find our newsletter to be insightful, which may open new thoughts and ideas that enhance your capacity to take care of your concerns.

Once again, thank you very much for your partnership. As always, please reach out to us with any comments or questions. I can be reached directly at nashizawa@inreachce.com or (512) 904-1829.

If you were to gather your learners into a room and ask them to match brands to logos like a white check mark, a blue bird or a little apple symbol, how well do you think they would do? What if you did the same exercise with your logo and those of your competitors? Do you think the results would be the same?

Branding Consistency

Associations and continuing education providers rarely have the marketing budgets of Nike, Twitter, or Apple. However, those companies use branding consistency, and that approach fits any budget. When you shop for shoes or a smartphone, you often look for brands with strong and consistent messaging. That consistency makes the brand easy to recognize. If you want to stay competitive, you must work to build that same level of consistency. One easy way to improve your consistency is to audit your InReach-powered catalog. Some things to look for:

Does the banner or header match your current website’s banner/header?

Do the navigation menus get your learners to where you want them to go if they’re going back to your organizational website?

Is there consistency in the color pallet and fonts across the catalog and your organization website?

If you use the right hand real estate on the catalog home page, are you using that to reinforce your brand, or is it housekeeping language that could be placed elsewhere?

Email Blast Branding

In addition to the catalog pages, when was the last time you looked at the system-generated emails that are delivered through InReach? Are the emails fully branded or simply plain text? Utilizing these informative emails as another extension of your brand is a great way to not only inform your learners of their registration information, completion status, etc. but also add another learner touch point to your brand.

Are you ready to become the Nike, Twitter or Apple of continuing education? Contact your Client Success Manager today explore the possibilities and become emPowered by InReach.

If you want to contribute to the end of your professional continuing education (CE) program, online or otherwise, follow one or several of these ten rules that create lousy online CE or are you already following these rules? If so, your program may be in the early stages of what is bound to be a slow demise.

Rule #1: DO NOT PROVIDE ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION—AT ALL.

You’ve heard the rationale for not providing online continuing education: Online CE will cannibalize in-person events. Networking is too big of a part of professional CE, and you don’t get networking through online programming. It is too expensive to provide online programming. First, none of these “excuses” are true. Second, even if you don’t buy your excuses are not true, someone else will provide online continuing education if you don’t provide it. If you aren’t fully in the game, your learners will look elsewhere for their online CE.

Rule #2: PROVIDE ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION—BUT MINIMIZE ITS PRESENCE, VALUE, ETC.

So, you’ve figured out a way to provide online CE (InReach!), but you have no business plan or strategic plan to work for the success of your online delivery of CE. You are probably motivated to do nothing by the “fears” outlined in Rule #1, and you are not going to truly work for online CE success. Because you are offering “something” you call online CE rather than “everything” you can for online CE, you’ve checked “online CE” off your to-do list.

Rule #3: DESIGN AN OVERALL CONTINUING EDUCATION CURRICULUM THAT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION AS AN EQUAL PARTNER TO THE IN-PERSON EVENT.

For most continuing education providers, an in-person event must be economically sustainable. Therefore, economic limitations preclude providing a comprehensive curriculum that serves to meet all the educational needs of your learners. If the more economical online delivery of CE is utilized in the curriculum planning process, CE providers can increase member service by providing learners more educational opportunities and probably for the first-time ever, a comprehensive CE catalog.

Rule #4: CONTINUE TO DEVOTE CE RESOURCES TO ONLY IN-PERSON CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS.

Most CE professionals and staff have significant workloads. Getting in-person event details handled can be all consuming. Given the focus on in-person events many times online CE is an afterthought and not a priority. Making online CE a required part of your overall CE work is fundamental to a successful CE program. Don’t ignore it!

Rule #5: DO NOT PLAN AND PROVIDE ONLINE-ONLY PROGRAMS.

While webcasting and capturing in-person events is a must-do, there is much more to online CE planning. The online delivery mechanism and studio-only produced CE is the best way to fill gaps in your overall curriculum. This means you provide programming that is online only and not related to an in-person event. Because online delivery is more affordable than in-person events, you can now plan and provide programming that you could never provide through an in-person event. For example, it is possible through online delivery to prove programming to addresses narrow and more advanced substantive areas. Likewise, if there is a need to quickly deliver important information, the turnaround in planning and delivering an online program is the most effective way gets the critical information to your learners.

Rule #6: DO NOT WEBCAST, CAPTURE OR REPURPOSE YOUR IN-PERSON EVENTS.

A lot of work goes into planning in-person events. Online versions of your in-person events multiply the fruits of the hard work. A proactive plan to use the content of the in-person event every possible way will maximize the return on your investment and keep your participants happy. With very little additional effort, you can reach a broader audience and increase your net revenue by webcasting and capturing programs to delivery on demand programs. It’s an economy of scale principle.

Rule #7: MARKET IN PERSON EVENTS ONLY.

Like online programming itself, marketing of online programs is often treated as an afterthought. Just having an online catalog on your website is not enough. You must push the opportunity out to your learners through all standard marketing tools. Additionally, promotion of individual online courses should be as aggressive and routine as marketing in-person CE events. Set up and follow a marketing plan.

Rule #8: LET YOUR SPEAKERS PRESENT ONLINE PROGRAMS WITHOUT TRAINING OR BEST PRACTICES.

Presenting to an in-person audience differs from presenting to an in-person/online or online audience. When conducting speaker training, include training that addresses best practices in presenting online programs. See the InReach training catalog for best practices in speaker training.

Rule #9: PICK AN ONLINE DELIVERY MECHANISM AND USE ONLY THAT ONE IN PROVIDING ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION.

Don’t be lazy and don’t presume. Your learners and their delivery preferences for online programs vary. Meet the needs for all by providing every possible delivery: in-person events, webcasts, webinars, replay, audio only, on demand. Be a full-service CE provider.

Rule#10: JUST DO IT THE WAY YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE IT.

Don’t get stuck in a CE rut. Evaluate how you are doing with your online CE catalog. Look at your planning cycles, training of speakers, content, materials, and overall program quality, and make appropriate changes to improve your product.

The adage, “Rules are made to be broken,” certainly holds true for these rules. Do the rules describe, in whole or part, how you handle your online CE? If so, break the rules now and take steps to build a long, healthy life for your continuing education program.

What is Your Organization’s Member Share?

For InReach partners that are associations, member share means the percentage of your membership that buy CE products from you. Knowing your member share is a good thing. First, you can define potential opportunity for growth, and second, you can quantify the number of members that take advantage of what is typically identified as the most popular member benefit.

Confirm Your Member Share

For those with access to CE regulatory data, you can easily confirm your member share. You can measure it by hours or by purchaser.
Both methods provide valuable information. Who buys from you, and how much do they buy?

For those without regulatory data, you can estimate your member share. You can compare purchaser lists with membership lists.
You can also include CE questions in member surveys.

Most associations see a 25–35% member share. There is often significant room to grow. However, you should not assume member share growth is always necessary. You need a precise assessment before making decisions. If you want more revenue, raising prices works better than increasing volume.

How to Grow Your Membership Through Member Share?

Most association executives and volunteer leaders want to serve as many members as possible, especially if the association is a voluntary organization. So, you might be compelled to grow member share without consideration of costs related to growing. Absent that mandate, you should analyze costs and balance any risk of growing member share against the benefits of growing your market share. While you normally profit when you increase member share, there are instances where that will not be the case. For example, more members might purchase CE from you if you lower your prices or begin to give away free content. Be careful if you have challenging revenue goals.

A client recently asked me how to grow member share. Admittedly I was tired and had recently lost an important football game, but I was left flat-footed. I suggested actions related to selling more CE and not selling to members that have never purchased before. Recognizing my weakness, I have drilled down and done research to provide a better answer to that specific client and to all of you!

Get Feedback from the Right People

You already know what your current customers think about your CE offering because you ask them almost every time they buy from you. “How do you like the program…?” To increase market share what you need to do is ask those members that aren’t buying from you. Through surveys and focus groups find out how they are getting their continuing education, and what is the barrier for them in buying from you. As an aside, always ask them specifically about their educational needs. This feedback may give you information upon which to act in gaining member share.

Things to Try to Increase Member Share

Incentives

Reward members for referring a member that has never purchased from you. A discount?
Incentivize members that have never purchased from you by providing a discount for a first-time purchase. Create a limited window of time with this opportunity to generate a sense of urgency to purchase. As an alternative, send an electronic thank you note with a discount to be used on a second purchase. Or do both!

Extras

Provide program extras without increasing prices: Pre- and post- programs on the same subject of the primary program; a supplement to supporting course materials like a tip sheet, e-book, or a checklist.

Valuable Content

Target members with valuable content you know will be helpful to your member. This doesn’t have to be a product, it can be a communication relating to their practice area. For example, let your bankruptcy practitioners know that there are Senate hearings this week on XY and Z bankruptcy law provisions. Notify litigators that the new procedural rules are effective in XX weeks, and you can find the new rules here. If you are offering programming on the new rules, let them know about that too. At some point, the member may begin to rely on you as a source of information that is important to them.

Be Personal

Be personal. Everyone wants to feel wanted. Ask program planners, speakers, and authors to reach out to people they know and ask them to attend their upcoming program or alert them to the release of a new book. Carrying on the bankruptcy example, if you have a program on bankruptcy CALL practitioners in that area and offer a personal invitation to register for the program. You’d be surprised how much a staff of five can do in 30 minutes to make an impact. (Make it fun. Make it a contest. Include food.) Thank first time purchasers by listing their names in a print ad for your association journal.

Leadership

Invoke your leadership to advocate for your department and the products you produce. Association leaders love to make a difference, and this is an easy task. Every time a president speaks to or meets with a member, ask for their loyalty to the association by promoting the quality and breadth of your CE offering.

Whew! Longer than normal, but I’m not going to be caught flat-footed again. If you have increased your member share, please let me know how you did it.

The transformation of CME: from historic roots to tech-driven, inclusive future, shaping proactive, informed healthcare professionals worldwide.

Introduction:

Continuing Medical Education (CME) has undergone significant transformations over the years. It is adapting to the dynamic landscape of healthcare and the evolving needs of medical professionals. From its inception to the present day, this article delves into the journey of CME, examining historical milestones, current requirements and providing insights into the future of medical education.

Historical Perspective:

CME traces its roots back to the early 20th century when medical professionals recognized the need for ongoing education to keep pace with rapid advancements in healthcare. The American Medical Association (AMA) pioneered the concept of CME in the 1920s. Thus, emphasizing the importance of physicians staying informed about emerging medical knowledge.

Over the decades, CME evolved from informal gatherings to structured programs, incorporating lectures, workshops and conferences. In the latter half of the 20th century, accrediting bodies like the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) emerged, establishing guidelines to ensure the quality and relevance of educational activities.

Current Requirements:

Today, CME is an integral part of maintaining licensure and board certification for healthcare professionals. The requirements for CME vary by region and medical specialty, but the overarching goal is to ensure that professionals stay abreast of the latest developments, techniques, and evidence-based practices in their fields.

ACCME, a central accrediting body in the United States, outlines criteria for providers to offer accredited CME activities. These criteria include needs assessment, educational planning, evaluation, and the incorporation of relevant educational formats. Additionally, many medical boards and professional organizations mandate a certain number of CME hours for license renewal, emphasizing the commitment to lifelong learning.

Technology’s Impact on CME:

One of the most transformative elements in the evolution of CME is the integration of technology. Traditional methods, such as live lectures and printed materials, have given way to online platforms, webinars, and interactive modules. This shift not only accommodates the busy schedules of healthcare professionals but also allows for a more personalized and flexible learning experience.

Simulations and virtual reality have become valuable tools in medical education, offering realistic scenarios for hands-on training. These technological advancements enhance the practical applicability of CME, providing healthcare professionals with opportunities to refine their skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Transformation of CME: Future Landscape

As we look ahead, the future of Continuing Medical Education (CME) is set for even greater innovation. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will play a key role in shaping the next generation of learning experiences. These tools will personalize educational content, adapting to each learner’s unique needs and professional goals.

With the help of data analytics, CME providers can create tailored learning paths that align with individual specialties and interests. As a result, healthcare professionals will benefit from more relevant, efficient, and impactful education.

In addition, the growing emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare will influence how CME is designed and delivered. Future programs may focus more on teamwork, communication, and shared problem-solving across medical disciplines. This integrated approach promotes a deeper understanding of the complex, connected nature of patient care.

Furthermore, the global reach of modern healthcare highlights the need for international cooperation in CME. Cross-border initiatives and partnerships are likely to expand, creating a global network for sharing medical knowledge, research, and best practices. By fostering worldwide collaboration, CME can strengthen healthcare delivery and innovation across all regions.

Expanding Access and Inclusivity in the Transformation of CME:

The evolution of CME also involves a growing focus on increasing access and inclusivity. Recognizing that healthcare professionals span diverse demographics and geographical locations, efforts are underway to democratize access to quality education. Virtual conferences, webinars, and on-demand courses eliminate geographical barriers, enabling professionals from remote areas to engage in CME activities without the constraints of travel. Additionally, the incorporation of subtitles, diverse language options, and culturally sensitive content ensures that CME is inclusive and accessible to a broader spectrum of medical professionals.

Interactive and Engaging Learning Experiences:

As the landscape of adult learning evolves, so does the approach to CME. The future of medical education will likely witness a surge in interactive and engaging learning experiences. Gamification elements, virtual patient case studies, and collaborative problem-solving scenarios are emerging trends. These innovative approaches not only enhance knowledge retention but also make the learning process more enjoyable. By incorporating elements that mirror real-world medical challenges, CME programs prepare healthcare professionals for the complexities they may encounter in their daily practice.

Transformation of CME Means Continuous Quality Improvement

In the future, a key focus of Continuing Medical Education (CME) will center on continuous quality improvement. Through the integration of feedback loops, data analytics, and outcome assessments, providers will be able to measure program effectiveness in real time. As a result, they can quickly identify strengths, address gaps, and enhance learning outcomes.

By leveraging insights from participant feedback and performance data, CME providers can refine and tailor their courses to meet the changing needs of healthcare professionals. This ongoing improvement keeps CME dynamic, adaptable, and aligned with the latest medical trends, scientific discoveries, and evolving healthcare demands.

In conclusion, the evolution of Continuing Medical Education highlights the resilience and adaptability of the medical profession. From its early 20th-century roots to today’s technology-driven, interactive learning environments, CME has continuously advanced to meet modern challenges. Looking ahead, technology, personalized learning, and collaboration will further elevate medical education—ultimately improving patient outcomes and community health worldwide. As CME continues to evolve, its vital role in shaping the future of healthcare remains clear: empowering professionals to deliver the highest quality of care in an ever-changing medical landscape.

Our Definition of School is Changing

The Role of Education in Professional Growth

It’s back-to-school season, and the kids aren’t the only ones preparing to dive back into learning. Increasingly, adult professionals across nearly every industry are also turning their attention to education. After all, in today’s rapidly changing world—and especially in the new age of artificial intelligence (AI)—staying current is no longer optional. For some, taking courses is a requirement mandated by their state or industry. For others, it’s a strategic move to earn a promotion or maintain their current position. Meanwhile, many professionals are pursuing learning opportunities simply because they want to stay sharp and at the top of their game. Ultimately, with AI now influencing nearly every aspect of work and life, continuing education has shifted from being a choice to being a necessity.

Educational Content Created by and for the Leaders in the Fields

We do a lot of thinking about the nature of school as it applies to the ongoing education of working professionals, because our customers are continuing education (CE) managers and educational content creators. For those who work for professional associations, continuing education is a key member benefit and they rely upon continuing education to remain experts in their fields. They are people with fingers on the pulse of their respective industries. They understand the needs of the professionals they serve and, in response, create educational content that helps those professionals do their jobs.

Medical and Legal Professionals are Just the Beginning

Our customers provide educational programming for people in life-or-death professions, like medicine, or people responsible for financial health and professionals who keep the innocent out of jail or the guilty in. When it comes to educational content the learners may be different, but they all share the need for a “school” that is flexible enough to fit their work/life paradigm and pretty much all are dealing with work schedules that are anything but flexible. Our learners rely on the expertise of our partners to develop current, actionable and valuable content that meets the specific accreditation requirements of specific industries.

Learn What You Need from Wherever You Are

The long, dark days of COVID-19 dramatically expanded the incredible world of online education. During this time, remote learning opened the door to a new, flexible model of education—a truly fungible school where learning can happen anywhere. Today, the classroom is wherever the learner needs it to be—on a laptop, tablet, phone, or even in a traditional setting. Furthermore, parts of an educational program can now take many forms, such as the flipped classroom model, which blends live instruction with independent study.

As a result, classrooms can easily transform into the ideal education delivery vehicle for each participant, whether through a webcast, webinar, podcast, or another digital format. In addition, these sessions can be delivered live or on demand, giving learners ultimate flexibility. Moreover, participants can complete assessments, provide feedback, and instantly receive credit for their work. Ultimately, this evolution of remote learning has created a win-win opportunity—developing a global community of professionals who now have an unending supply of knowledge right at their fingertips.

What makes a School a School?

It’s definitely not the walls or the location on a map. A school has become far more than our old images of brick buildings. It’s a vehicle for delivering educational content the way the learner needs it to be delivered at any given time. It may have walls; it may have a power cord. It may be on a beach in the South Pacific. One can only hope.

Single Sign On or SSO: Why Your Organization Needs One

Have you been thinking about implementing Single Sign-On (SSO) for your Association Management System (AMS) or Member Management System (MMS)? You can easily integrate it with your InReach catalog. Not sure where to start? Take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions. We’ve shared this helpful resource again to guide you and your staff through the basics of SSO implementation.

Q: What are the benefits of having a Single Sign On?

A: There are multiple! Not only will your learners have the same log-in credentials on the InReach catalog as your organizational website, but your member data will also be in sync with your AMS/MMS database. You can also support member and non-member pricing automatically to promote the benefits of becoming a member. Additionally, there are other InReach features that are only usable with a Single Sign On – talk to your CSM for details!

Q: Can you integrate with my AMS or MMS?

A: Yes, we can! We have current integrations with major AMS and MMS providers as well as smaller “home-grown” solutions.

Q: Is there costs associated with implementing a Single Sign On?

A: Yes, there is a fee associated with implementation as well as a monthly maintenance fee. Contact your CSM for a quote today!

Q: How long does the implementation take?

A: Implementation time can vary, but it’s usually takes anywhere from six to eight weeks.

Q: If I’m already an InReach partner, can I switch to Single Sign On?

A: Yes! During the implementation process we’ll work with you on syncing up currently existing InReach learner accounts and the accounts you have stored in your AMS/MMS.

Q: Will a Single Sign on affect how the InReach Contact Center supports my learners/end-users?

A: Yes, since your AMS or MMS will be the system of record for learner’s log-in credentials, you will need to have internal support staff to assist your learners with log-in related issues. InReach Contact Center staff will not be able to do so, but they will continue to provide support for catalog or registration issues.

Setting Up Your Environment

1. Dedicated Space:

Start by designating a specific area for your web presentations, webinars, or online classes. This not only provides consistency but also helps you mentally transition into a professional mode. Ensure this space is quiet and free from distractions.

2. Ergonomic Setup:

Invest in a comfortable chair and desk setup to maintain good posture throughout your sessions. This not only contributes to your well-being but also impacts your overall presentation quality.

Video Production Techniques

3. Camera Quality:

If possible, use a high-quality external camera rather than your computer’s built-in webcam. This significantly enhances video clarity and sharpness, lending a more professional look to your broadcasts.

4. Framing:

Position the camera at eye level, ensuring that your face and upper body are centered in the frame. This framing technique is not only aesthetically pleasing but also fosters a sense of direct eye contact with your audience.

5. Composition:

Remember the rule of thirds – imagine the screen divided into nine equal parts, and position yourself slightly off-center for a visually appealing composition. This adds depth and balance to your frame.

The Importance of Audio

6. Invest in a Quality Microphone:

Superior audio quality is paramount in web presentations, webinars, and online classes. Investing in an external microphone, such as a USB condenser mic, can significantly enhance your audio, making your voice clear and distinct.

7. Noise Reduction:

Minimize background noise by using noise-cancelling software or hardware. Ensure your microphone is set up to pick up your voice and not ambient noise.

8. Speak Clearly:

Enunciate your words and speak at a steady pace. Proper diction and clarity are vital in virtual presentations where non-verbal cues might not be as apparent.

Creating a Quiet Space

9. Soundproofing:

Consider soundproofing your space with curtains, carpets, or wall panels. This helps reduce external noise and echoes, resulting in a more professional and focused presentation.

10. Do Not Disturb:

Inform your household or cohabitants of your presentation schedule to minimize interruptions. You can also use “on-air” signs to indicate when you’re live.

Clutter-Free Background

11. Declutter:

Remove any distractions or clutter from your background. A clean, organized space ensures that your audience’s attention remains on you and the content you’re presenting.

12. Background Choices:

You can use virtual backgrounds, but ensure they are professional and non-distracting. Alternatively, opt for a physical background that reflects your style or branding.

Mastering Lighting

13. Natural Light:

Whenever possible, use natural light as your primary light source. Position yourself facing a window to achieve a soft, flattering light that enhances your appearance.

14. Artificial Lighting:

Invest in soft, diffused artificial lighting if natural light is insufficient. Ring lights or softboxes can illuminate your face evenly, reducing harsh shadows.

15. Avoid Overexposure:

Ensure your lighting is balanced to avoid overexposing your background or causing distracting glare. Experiment with lighting angles and intensities to find the perfect balance.

Testing and Rehearsing

16. Test Equipment:

Before going live, test your equipment, including your camera, microphone, and lighting. Ensure that everything is functioning correctly and that your software is up to date.

17. Rehearse:

Practice your presentations, webinars, or classes beforehand. Familiarize yourself with the content, transitions, and any interactive elements you plan to use.

Engaging Your Audience

18. Interaction:

Encourage audience engagement through polls, chat, and Q&A sessions. This not only keeps your audience involved but also provides valuable insights and feedback.

19. Visual Aids:

Incorporate visual aids such as slides, diagrams, or videos to enhance your content. Keep these aids simple, relevant, and visually appealing.

In conclusion, optimizing web presentations, webinars, and online classes is essential for making a lasting impact on your audience. By setting up the right environment, mastering video production techniques, prioritizing audio quality, ensuring a quiet space, maintaining a clutter-free background, positioning your camera effectively, and using proper lighting, you can elevate your virtual engagements to a professional and engaging level. Remember that consistent practice and feedback are key to improving your online presentation skills and creating a memorable experience for your audience.
