What is Your Organization’s Member Share?

For InReach partners that are associations, member share means the percentage of your membership that buy CE products from you. Knowing your member share is a good thing. First, you can define potential opportunity for growth, and second, you can quantify the number of members that take advantage of what is typically identified as the most popular member benefit.

Confirm Your Member Share

For those with access to CE regulatory data, you can easily confirm your member share. You can measure it by hours or by purchaser.
Both methods provide valuable information. Who buys from you, and how much do they buy?

For those without regulatory data, you can estimate your member share. You can compare purchaser lists with membership lists.
You can also include CE questions in member surveys.

Most associations see a 25–35% member share. There is often significant room to grow. However, you should not assume member share growth is always necessary. You need a precise assessment before making decisions. If you want more revenue, raising prices works better than increasing volume.

How to Grow Your Membership Through Member Share?

Most association executives and volunteer leaders want to serve as many members as possible, especially if the association is a voluntary organization. So, you might be compelled to grow member share without consideration of costs related to growing. Absent that mandate, you should analyze costs and balance any risk of growing member share against the benefits of growing your market share. While you normally profit when you increase member share, there are instances where that will not be the case. For example, more members might purchase CE from you if you lower your prices or begin to give away free content. Be careful if you have challenging revenue goals.

A client recently asked me how to grow member share. Admittedly I was tired and had recently lost an important football game, but I was left flat-footed. I suggested actions related to selling more CE and not selling to members that have never purchased before. Recognizing my weakness, I have drilled down and done research to provide a better answer to that specific client and to all of you!

Get Feedback from the Right People

You already know what your current customers think about your CE offering because you ask them almost every time they buy from you. “How do you like the program…?” To increase market share what you need to do is ask those members that aren’t buying from you. Through surveys and focus groups find out how they are getting their continuing education, and what is the barrier for them in buying from you. As an aside, always ask them specifically about their educational needs. This feedback may give you information upon which to act in gaining member share.

Things to Try to Increase Member Share

Incentives

Reward members for referring a member that has never purchased from you. A discount?
Incentivize members that have never purchased from you by providing a discount for a first-time purchase. Create a limited window of time with this opportunity to generate a sense of urgency to purchase. As an alternative, send an electronic thank you note with a discount to be used on a second purchase. Or do both!

Extras

Provide program extras without increasing prices: Pre- and post- programs on the same subject of the primary program; a supplement to supporting course materials like a tip sheet, e-book, or a checklist.

Valuable Content

Target members with valuable content you know will be helpful to your member. This doesn’t have to be a product, it can be a communication relating to their practice area. For example, let your bankruptcy practitioners know that there are Senate hearings this week on XY and Z bankruptcy law provisions. Notify litigators that the new procedural rules are effective in XX weeks, and you can find the new rules here. If you are offering programming on the new rules, let them know about that too. At some point, the member may begin to rely on you as a source of information that is important to them.

Be Personal

Be personal. Everyone wants to feel wanted. Ask program planners, speakers, and authors to reach out to people they know and ask them to attend their upcoming program or alert them to the release of a new book. Carrying on the bankruptcy example, if you have a program on bankruptcy CALL practitioners in that area and offer a personal invitation to register for the program. You’d be surprised how much a staff of five can do in 30 minutes to make an impact. (Make it fun. Make it a contest. Include food.) Thank first time purchasers by listing their names in a print ad for your association journal.

Leadership

Invoke your leadership to advocate for your department and the products you produce. Association leaders love to make a difference, and this is an easy task. Every time a president speaks to or meets with a member, ask for their loyalty to the association by promoting the quality and breadth of your CE offering.

Whew! Longer than normal, but I’m not going to be caught flat-footed again. If you have increased your member share, please let me know how you did it.

Given the importance of social media and online marketing, blogs have become essential for promoting products, including educational ones. A blog helps drive traffic to your website and strengthens your social media presence. Readers appreciate blogs because they simplify complex topics into easy-to-understand content. These benefits are valuable for any organization. However, if your goal is to sell a continuing education product, a blog offers even more. It can increase inbound links to your product and potentially boost sales.

Increase Website Traffic with a Blog

In a recent study, research found that having a blog increased website traffic by 58% and the use of inbound links by 98%. Creating a blog to promote a program, publication, or other educational product just makes sense and should be done by your subject matter expert. Whew, you were scared I was going to suggest you write the blog, weren’t you? The only add to your to-do list is to make writing a blog a speaker or author assignment.

Start Writing

Add writing a blog to the list of instructions you provide a newly committed speaker or newly committed author – and provide a hard deadline! The blog should be about his or her piece of the program or publication. Explain to your speaker or author that the blog will include an inbound link to your educational product and could increase registrations or sales. Ask every speaker on a program and every contributor to a publication to blog. Even if you get 75% response, you will have multiple blog posts, which will enhance your chances of success.

A Blog as a Teaser

Tell your SME not to give away the farm in writing the blog but the blog must provide value. Make sure the SME understands your business objective. The blog should provide relevant information and prompt the reader to take the next step—clicking on the inbound link and buying. The SME should still transfer knowledge in the blog. The SME should also give a peek into the additional topics that are to be addressed in the program or publication. It’s knowledge with a tease.

Target Audience

Providing blogs to your target audience provides value in that you create an audience that trusts you and the information you provide. But we all know that increased sales are the real payoff. To measure your blog success in sales conversions, use website analytics to monitor. Remember to give this approach some time, and don’t expect results overnight.

Accountability in Continuing Education

The evolution of continuing professional education over the last five decades has been fueled, in large part, by the objective of protecting the public. As technology advances and society changes, professional education has been responsive to many of those advances and changes. For example, practice management courses include new ways to streamline a practice by using the most recent technology. As to societal changes, it may be the CE providers are falling short in meeting the needs of their learners. After all, societal changes are complicated and scary.

Case-Studies

Over the last year, the #metoo movement has been front and center. While common sense and professional rules provide some guidance on how to act with coworkers and clients or patients, the rules aren’t enough. Professionals need case-study based education in this area. What should the professional do or not do in specific situations? By using a case-study approach, you provide practical tools that aren’t apparent to well-meaning, but clueless doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc. Do you provide sexual harassment and sexual discrimination education?

Data Shows that Female Lawyers are Moving Up Faster in #MeToo Era

Training in Diversity and Inclusion

In some states, lawyers are required to get training in diversity and inclusion, another sensitive societal issue. Diversity and inclusion training address the need for diversity within professions, but it also addresses how improved results come from diversity and inclusion. Today, corporations do not hire law firms without considering the makeup of the law firm. Further, many corporations in hiring will specifically ask for a diverse legal team. Do you provide diversity and inclusion education?

Addiction and Mental Health Issues

Addiction and mental health issues impact medical, legal, and financial professionals. High-pressure practices with life and death consequences result in many professionals needing help. Providing programming (online and confidential) is often a first step in having a professional start to deal with a problem. Training others to recognize addiction or mental health problems in their peers and providing tools on how to respond to those problems could save lives and certainly protect the public. Unfortunately, addiction and mental health issues in professionals result in consequences like a discipline office prosecuting a professional for failure to adequately treat or represent a patient or client. Do you provide addiction and mental health programming?

Why are lawyers killing themselves?

Final Thoughts

There are many other societal issues where training could help professionals: Non-English speakers, incapacity, low-income clients and patients. If you can’t provide programming, for whatever reason, take a little time and check out the InReach Sharing Network. Your InReach peers may have already developed the programming you need in these areas. Let’s make the world a little better.

After I went out into the real world and was no longer in school, it took me a few years to get used to not having a spring or summer break. Not that I felt entitled to time off, it was just that my body and brain felt like something wasn’t right. It was a seasonal need that wasn’t being met. Some continuing education providers continue to do work seasonally, and I understand why: 1. In the early days of continuing education, providers modeled their course schedule after semesters in school, fall and spring. Why? I don’t know, and 2. While a real work life doesn’t include built in breaks like school life, continuing education providers do get to take time off and that time off is generally in the summer. I know it’s hard to break tradition, but I want you to “Just say no to summer break!”

I’m not suggesting no work is done in the summer. I am suggesting that, absent a compliance deadline, creation of new content comes to a standstill in the summer. Rethink this approach! There are several reasons to do so.

Online Education: A Game Changer

First, with online education it doesn’t matter where you are to consume continuing education. With vacations and summer holidays, a busy professional can take an on-demand course or participate in a webinar or webcast without clients or patients knocking at the door. When I was working as a direct provider of continuing education, one of the learners of a live webinar commented, “It was great to be able to participate from the beach in Mexico!” I thought she was showing off a bit, but you get my point. If you continue to create content through the summer, you just might discover an audience you never had before.

Creating Content through Summer Break

Second, creating content through the summer increases your capacity to provide a comprehensive catalog by 25%. Yes, you want to continue with live programming, but the summer is also an opportunity to record programs. Your subject matter experts have availability during the summer, so use this time to record a one-hour update, advanced version of an existing program, or cover a topic in an introductory fashion. Just like your learner, the subject matter expert can present a webinar from any location! You know where your curriculum gaps exist. Fill them during the summer.

Programs in Summer and Fall

Last, ask your program planners that work on all-day programs during the summer and fall, to also plan a one-hour summer program. It is almost always the case that a topic that is good doesn’t make it to the gross outline of the all-day program. Ask your program planners to identify that topic and plan the summer live program or recording. Obviously, target marketing is easy with this approach. It is everyone that attended the all-day program.

Final Thoughts on Summer Break

If summer programming is something you haven’t done previously, start out small and give it a try. Set reasonable goals. Even two, one-hour programs a month during the summer can make a difference to your learner. It can also bolster your catalog not only by adding new content but by creating a vibrant and changing catalog throughout the entire year.
