However, those companies use branding consistency, and that approach fits any budget. When you shop for shoes or a smartphone, you often look for brands with strong and consistent messaging. That consistency makes the brand easy to recognize. If you want to stay competitive, you must work to build that same level of consistency. One easy way to improve your consistency is to audit your InReach-powered catalog. Some things to look for:</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1>What is Your Organization&#8217;s Member Share?</h1>
<p>For InReach partners that are associations, member share means the percentage of your membership that buy <a href="https://inreachce.com/about-us/contact-us/">CE products</a> from you. Knowing your member share is a good thing. First, you can define potential opportunity for growth, and second, you can quantify the number of members that take advantage of what is typically identified as the most popular member benefit.</p>
<h2>Confirm Your Member Share</h2>
<p data-start="94" data-end="319">For those with access to CE regulatory data, you can easily confirm your member share. You can measure it by hours or by purchaser.<br data-start="227" data-end="230" />Both methods provide valuable information. Who buys from you, and how much do they buy?</p>
<p data-start="321" data-end="503">For those without regulatory data, you can estimate your member share. You can compare purchaser lists with membership lists.<br data-start="448" data-end="451" />You can also include CE questions in member surveys.</p>
<p data-start="505" data-end="803" data-is-last-node="" data-is-only-node="">Most associations see a 25–35% member share. There is often significant room to grow. However, you should not assume member share growth is always necessary. You need a precise assessment before making decisions. If you want more revenue, raising prices works better than increasing volume.</p>
<h2>How to Grow Your Membership Through Member Share?</h2>
<p>Most association executives and volunteer leaders want to serve as many members as possible, especially if the association is a voluntary organization. So, you might be compelled to grow member share without consideration of costs related to growing. Absent that mandate, you should analyze costs and balance any risk of growing member share against the benefits of growing your market share. While you normally profit when you increase member share, there are instances where that will not be the case. For example, more members might purchase CE from you if you lower your prices or begin to give away free content.   Be careful if you have challenging revenue goals.</p>
<p>A client recently asked me how to grow member share.  Admittedly I was tired and had recently lost an important football game, but I was left flat-footed. I suggested actions related to selling more CE and not selling to members that have never purchased before. Recognizing my weakness, I have drilled down and done research to provide a better answer to that specific client and to all of you!</p>
<h2><strong>Get Feedback from the Right People </strong></h2>
<p>You already know what your current customers think about your CE offering because you ask them almost every time they buy from you. “How do you like the program…?”  To increase market share what you need to do is ask those members that aren’t buying from you. Through surveys and focus groups find out how they are getting their continuing education, and what is the barrier for them in buying from you. As an aside, always ask them specifically about their educational needs. This feedback may give you information upon which to act in gaining member share.</p>
<h2><strong>Things to Try to Increase Member Share</strong></h2>
<h3>Incentives</h3>
<ul>
<li>Reward members for referring a member that has never purchased from you. A discount?<br />
Incentivize members that have never purchased from you by providing a discount for a first-time purchase. Create a limited window of time with this <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://inreachce.com/blog/opportunity-and-cost/" title="Focus on Opportunity and Cost" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="13438">opportunity</a> to generate a sense of urgency to purchase. As an alternative, send an electronic thank you note with a discount to be used on a second purchase. Or do both!</li>
</ul>
<h3>Extras</h3>
<ul>
<li>Provide program extras without increasing prices: Pre- and post- programs on the same subject of the primary program; a supplement to supporting course materials like a tip sheet, e-book, or a checklist.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Valuable Content</h3>
<ul>
<li>Target members with valuable content you know will be helpful to your member. This doesn’t have to be a product, it can be a communication relating to their practice area. For example, let your bankruptcy practitioners know that there are Senate hearings this week on XY and Z bankruptcy law provisions. Notify litigators that the new procedural rules are effective in XX weeks, and you can find the new rules here. If you are offering programming on the new rules, let them know about that too. At some point, the member may begin to rely on you as a source of information that is important to them.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Be Personal</h3>
<ul>
<li>Be personal. Everyone wants to feel wanted. Ask program planners, speakers, and authors to reach out to people they know and ask them to attend their upcoming program or alert them to the release of a new book. Carrying on the bankruptcy example, if you have a program on bankruptcy CALL practitioners in that area and offer a personal invitation to register for the program. You’d be surprised how much a staff of five can do in 30 minutes to make an impact. (Make it fun. Make it a contest. Include food.) Thank first time purchasers by listing their names in a print ad for your association journal.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Leadership</h3>
<ul>
<li>Invoke your <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://inreachce.com/blog/what-is-leadership-really/" title="What is leadership REALLY?" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="13437">leadership</a> to advocate for your department and the products you produce. Association leaders love to make a difference, and this is an easy task. Every time a president speaks to or meets with a member, ask for their loyalty to the association by promoting the quality and breadth of your CE offering.</li>
</ul>

<p>In working with professional associations, nonprofits, and universities, I have been able to observe different approaches in making a decision on selecting a learning management system, deciding on an integration with an association management software, providing a single sign-on, and even in considering costs related to recording live continuing education sessions. Almost always the initial consideration is cost, which I recognize as a real concern having worked at an association for over a decade. And granted, any responsible staff person evaluating a purchase should consider costs to the organization. However, solely considering costs is short-sighted.</p>
<p>What puzzles me is that the decision-making process often stops at cost. If it isn’t in the budget or the cost is perceived to be too much, no further review is undertaken. While respecting the concern over cost, I maintain that the analysis is incomplete, and therefore flawed, unless the potential benefit derived from the purchase is also fully assessed. Benefit can be measured in dollars <em>and</em> in member/learner satisfaction.  This isn’t an exact science but knowing your members or learners enables you to put together some credible measures of potential value to offset costs.</p>
<h2>Revenue, Savings, Opportunity and Cost</h2>
<p>First ask yourself the question, “What is the likely revenue or savings I will create, if I say yes?” A couple of examples:</p>
<ul>
<li>If I pay X to record my sessions at the annual meeting, and I provide those sessions as on-demand programs later:
<ul>
<li>How many purchases of the on-demand programs are necessary to cover the costs?</li>
<li>Can I offer annual meeting registrants, for an increased fee, access to the archived sessions after the meeting? If so, how many are likely to opt into that opportunity?</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<h2>Considering a New LMS</h2>
<ul>
<li>If I am considering a new learning management system because my current <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://inreachce.com/blog/why-associations-should-consider-switching-their-lms/" title="Why Associations Should Consider Switching Their LMS" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="13472">LMS</a> has crashed several times, and the new LMS costs more, but it never crashes:
<ul>
<li>I have lost X customers due to the crash, and those customers will never return absent another solution. Do this math: X customers multiplied by average dollars spent in a year.  Your solution should have reporting to help you get this information.</li>
<li>Do the above prospectively. I’ve already lost X customers and with another crash, I will lose at least the same number of customers I lost before. Y customers multiplied by average dollars spent in a year. Note, this number could be even greater if some of your loyal customers gave you multiple chances after a failure.</li>
<li>How much staff time was lost due to these crashes? Take the value of your staff by the hour (don’t forget to add in benefits) and ask them to estimate the time they spent in handling calls, emails, refunds, etc.</li>
<li>If I select a new LMS, and I market the new solution, can I win back lost customers? If so, what is a good estimate of returning revenue?</li>
<li>Can I expand my current market share based on selecting a stable solution? If so, what is a good estimate of new revenue?</li>
<li>Measure in registration dollars. This will cost me Z registrations.</li>
<li>Or measure in membership dues dollars. For voluntary organizations that provide free continuing education, you cannot look at the cost of delivering free CLE without looking at the increase in membership dues after you start providing the free content. If you need to do so, survey those members and find out why they became members. You’ll see!</li>
</ul>

</ul>
<h2>First Time LMS Solutions</h2>
<ul>
<li>If am looking for a first-time LMS solution or a change in an LMS solution, and I want to go with the lowest bid:
<ul>
<li>What am I not getting with this solution that the others are providing?</li>
<li>How can the LMS provider bid at such a low rate?
<ul>
<li>Are there fewer features?</li>
<li>Is the provider going to charge me for things that are normally provided without cost by the other LMS?</li>
<li>Is the provider staffed adequately to provide me the level of service to which I am entitled?</li>
<li>Does the low bid indicate the provider may be desperate, and therefore on the brink of going out of business?</li>
<li>What is the cost of change if this provider is inadequate or goes out of business? Measure staff time, consider lost customers…</li>
</ul>
</li>

<p>Second, ask yourself about your learner satisfaction. “How happy can I make my customers if I say yes?” While you can’t always assign a dollar amount to satisfaction, you can consider the value of member loyalty to the overall organization.</p>

<h1>Are Learning Styles a Myth?</h1>
<p>At a recent conference I attended, a presenter committed blasphemy.  He suggested that learning styles were a MYTH.  There were audible gasps from the crowd.  I felt my blood pressure start to rise and decided to lead the rebellion against this wickedness.  After all, I know my learning style; I know the learning styles of my children, and I tutor law students respecting their learning styles. On a break at the conference, I volunteered to speak at the conference next year with a presentation to counter this sacrilege.</p>
<p>After I returned from the conference, I decided to see if there was ANY science behind this concept. With one Google search, I found there was A LOT of science behind this concept. How did I not know this?  Well, I’m not alone.</p>
<h2>History of Learning Styles</h2>
<p>The belief that people learn in different ways is a prevalent belief in American culture. The idea of learning styles is a century-old concept but grew in popularity in the 1950s and again in the 1970s. In the early 1990s, Neil Fleming developed the VARK questionnaire, 16 questions to establish someone’s learning style. VARK stands for “Visual, Auditory, Reading, and Kinesthetic.” While there were those that identified learning styles before Fleming, VARK is the most-used model today.</p>
<h2>What the Experts Say</h2>
<p>Some experts believe the ideas around learning styles spread as a result of the self-esteem movement. Teachers like to think they can reach every student. Students like to blame academic failures on a teacher that doesn’t adapt to their learning style. Today, one survey suggests that 90% of college students believe in learning styles, and likewise, 90% of teachers believe in learning styles.</p>
<p>However, scientists have debunked learning styles for some time. There is evidence that establishes people are not one type of learner. Students use multiple learning styles, but no single style resulted in better outcomes.</p>
<h2>The Study of Learning Styles</h2>
<p>Researchers Polly Hussman and Valerie Dean O’Louglin from Indiana University School of Medicine asked hundreds of college students to take the VARK questionnaire to determine what kind of learner the students were, and the students were then given study strategies that correlated to the identified learning style. The study concluded that not only did the students not study in ways that reflected their learning style, the students that adopted the strategies supporting their learning style didn’t do better on their tests. Further, the research established that students fall into certain study habits that, once formed were too hard to break.</p>
<p>Another study concludes that those that believe they are visual learners just like pictures more than words, and those that believe they are auditory learners just liked hearing words more. These preferences had no correlation to what the learners remembered. “…there’s evidence that people do try to treat tasks in accordance with what they believe to be their learning style, but it doesn’t help them,” says Daniel Willingham, a psychologist at the University of Virginia. “…learning styles have not panned out.”</p>
<p>Even the satirical-humor site, <em>The Onion</em>, has addressed learning styles. The headline of the article: “Parents of Nasal Learners Demand Odor-Based Curriculum.” A quote from the article:  &#8220;My 15-year-old daughter Chloe couldn&#8217;t sustain her interest in academics and, as a result, she would goof off with her friends and get in trouble,&#8221; said Michael Sweeney of Oswego, NY. &#8220;Now I realize that all those Ds and Fs did not represent any failure on my daughter&#8217;s part, but rather her school&#8217;s failure to provide an appropriate nasal-based curriculum.&#8221;  While ironic, this satire is not that far off.</p>
<h2>Take Away</h2>
<p>Cognitive science has identified varied techniques that support retaining knowledge:  spacing study sessions over time, experience the material in multiple modalities, and do practice tests.  Sounds like good, old-fashioned hard work to me.</p>
<p>What’s the takeaway for those that provide continuing education?  Present materials in multiple ways—use a balanced approach in presenting ideas.  Do not minimize a human’s ability to learn by identifying a single way to present information.  Use a potpourri of presentation approach, and you are bound to provide the balance every learner needs.</p>
